Psalms of David - Modern Translation - Psalm 71

In You, O Lord, I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame.

In Your righteousness, rescue me and deliver me;
turn Your ear to me and save me.

Be my rock, my dwelling place,
where I may always find safety.

You have decreed my salvation—
You are my fortress and my refuge.

Rescue me, O my God, from the hands of the unjust,
from those who oppress and bring harm.

For You have been my hope, O Lord,
my trust since my earliest days.
From my birth, You have upheld me;
from my mother’s womb, You have been my strength.

I will always sing Your praise!

Many look upon me with wonder,
but You are my mighty refuge.

My mouth is filled with Your praise,
declaring Your splendor all day long.

Do not cast me aside in my old age;
do not forsake me when my strength fades.

For my enemies whisper against me,
they say, “God has abandoned him!

There is no one to help.”

O God, do not be far from me!
Come quickly, O Lord, to my aid.

Let those who seek to harm me
be covered in shame and disgrace.

But as for me, I will always hope,
and I will praise You more and more.

My lips will tell of Your righteousness,
of Your saving deeds all day long—
though they are beyond measure!

I will proclaim Your mighty works, O Lord;
I will speak of Your righteousness alone.

O God, You have taught me from my youth,
and to this day I declare Your wonders.

Now, in my old age, do not forsake me,
until I have declared Your power to the next generation,
Your might to all who are to come.

Your righteousness, O God, reaches the heavens;
You have done great things—
who is like You, O Lord?

Though You have allowed troubles to come,
You will restore my life again.

From the depths of sorrow,
You will lift me up once more.

You will increase my honor
and comfort me once again.

I will praise You with music, O my God;
I will sing of Your faithfulness.

I will shout for joy and sing,
for You have redeemed my soul.

My tongue will proclaim Your righteousness all day long,
for those who sought my harm
have been silenced in their shame.
