Psalms of David - Modern Translation - Psalm 49

Hear this, all people,
listen, all who dwell upon the earth—
both rich and poor alike,
those with power and those without.

Wisdom speaks, and I will listen,
my heart will ponder what is true.

I will share a song of understanding,
a melody of insight and trust.

Why should I fear in times of trouble,
when greed surrounds me on every side?

Some trust in wealth and boast of their riches,
but no treasure can ransom a soul.

No amount can buy a life from passing,
for all must one day leave this world behind.

The wise and the foolish alike will perish,
their riches left to others.

They name lands after themselves,
yet their names fade with time.

Like sheep, they go down into the unknown,
but God will redeem my soul from the grave—
He will take me into His care forever.

Do not envy those who grow wealthy,
whose houses expand with abundance.

For when they pass, they take nothing with them,
their splendor does not follow.

Though they praise themselves in this life,
in the end, only God’s love remains.

But those who trust in the Eternal One
will dwell in His presence forever.
