Psalms of David - Modern Translation - Psalm 74

O God, why does trouble seem to last so long?
Why does Your hand feel distant from us?

Remember Your people, whom You have called,
whom You have redeemed as Your own.

The enemy has ravaged Your sacred place,
they have defiled what was meant for Your glory.

They raised their banners where Yours should be,
they shattered the doors and burned the halls.

They said in their hearts,
"Let us destroy them completely."

and they set fire to every place
where Your name was honored.

We see no signs, no prophets remain,
no one knows how long this will last.

How long, O God, will harm be allowed to boast?

Will those who reject You mock Your name forever?

Yet You, O God, are my King from ages past,
bringing salvation to the earth.

You parted the seas by Your power,
You crushed the might of the deep.

You opened the springs and rivers,
You dried up mighty floods.

The day and the night are Yours;
You set the sun and the moon in their places.

You established the seasons,
You shaped the earth with Your hands.

Remember, O Lord, how the enemy speaks against You,
how foolish hearts deny Your name.

Do not give Your beloved ones over to ruin,
do not forget the lives of the faithful.

Look upon Your covenant, O God,
for the land is filled with darkness and injustice.

Do not let the oppressed be forgotten,
may the poor and humble praise Your name.

Rise, O God, and defend Your cause!

Remember how the voices of the wicked rise against You,
how their words swell against You without end.
