Psalms of David - Modern Translation - Psalm 40

I waited patiently for You, O Lord,
and You turned toward me with love.

You lifted me from the pit of despair,
out of the miry depths,
and set my feet upon solid ground,
steadying my steps.

You placed a new song in my heart,
a song of praise to You, my God!

Many will see and be in awe,
and they too will put their trust in You.

Blessed are those who trust in the Lord,
who do not chase after empty promises
or turn to fleeting illusions.

O Lord my God,
Your wonders are beyond measure,
Your thoughts toward us more than can be counted.

If I tried to speak them all,
they would be more than the stars in the sky.

You do not seek empty offerings,
but a heart that delights in Your way.

So I say, “Here I am, Lord!

I desire to walk in Your truth.”

I proclaim Your love to all who will hear,
I do not hide Your faithfulness within my heart.

I tell of Your goodness and salvation,
for You, O Lord, are merciful and true.

Do not withhold Your kindness from me, O Lord,
let Your love and faithfulness always guard me.

Though troubles surround me
and my heart feels weak,
You are my strength,
my help in time of need.

Let those who seek You rejoice and be glad!

Let all who love Your saving presence
forever say, “The Lord is great!”

As for me, I am humble and in need,
but You, O Lord, think of me always.

You are my help and my deliverance—
O my God, do not delay!
